Interview Attire

Attire For Hire: Dressing For Interviews

When going to a job interview, how you dress is a big factor in whether or not you will be asked back for a second interview or will be considered for a job.  Employers like someone that is smartly dressed and takes pride in their appearance; someone that is neat and tidy. If you present yourself well, you will gain an edge on your competition by making a positive first impression.  Part of that first impression is what you wear! For any interview, think of your audience.  You should always dress to show your respect for the interviewer.  You want to be taken seriously!

Here are some helpful tips:

Men & Women

  • Well-groomed hairstyle
  • Clean, trimmed fingernails
  • Minimal cologne or perfume
  • Empty pockets–no bulges or tinkling coins
  • No gum, candy or cigarettes
  • Light briefcase or portfolio case
  • No visible body piercing (nose rings, eyebrow rings, etc.)
  • Color is important when choosing your interview outfit – navy blue, dark charcoal gray, and black are best

Men

  • Neckties should be neutral.  Simple stripes or small patterns are good
  • Dark shoes (black lace-ups are best)
  • Dark socks (black is best)
  • Get a haircut; short hair always fares best in interviews
  • Mustaches and beards – make sure they are neat and trimmed
  • No rings other than wedding ring or college ring
  • No earrings (if you normally wear one, take it out)

Women

  • Pants or a skirt with a blouse or collared shirt
  • Skirts should fall right at or below the knee
  • Shoes with conservative heels
  • Conservative hosiery at or near skin color (and no runs!)
  • Small purse or a briefcase
  • Jewelry and/or accessories should be minimal and tasteful
  • If you wear nail polish use clear or a conservative color
  • Minimal use of makeup (it should not be too noticeable)
  • No more than one ring on each hand
  • One set of earrings only

What Not to Wear on a Job Interview

It is very important to make a good first impression.  You need to dress professionally and separate your social image (if it’s more casual, and it probably is) from your professional presence.

Never:

  • Wear flip-flops or sneakers.
  • Wear underwear (bras, bra straps, briefs, boxers, etc.) that is visible.
  • Wear jeans.
  • Wear T-shirts.
  • Wear skirts that are too short.
  • Wear pants that are too low-rise or too tight.
  • Wear blouses that are too low-cut or too short – don’t show your cleavage or your belly.

What is Wrong with These Interview Outfits?

Man at left:

  • Shirt is too casual – sleeves are folded up
  • Jacket is too casual
  • Pants are too casual – too light in color
  • Shoes are too casual

Woman in center:

  • Should not wear a dress
  • Length of dress is too long – just below the knees is best

Woman at right:

  • Skirt is too casual
  • Length of skirt is too long – just below the knees is best
  • Shoes are too casual – no open toe
  • Need conservative hosiery at or near skin color
